The light crispness of the air was a telltale sign of spring, and the snow on the ground melted away to reveal new shoots of grass. In the freelands, anyway. In the north, the snow still coated the ground quite heavily, and finding healthy, young grass could be difficult. Not that Nexmason was much bothered by it - he'd lived in the far north long enough to be quite used to the struggles that the climate provided, and he'd found ways to overcome it. This particular time, though, he had traveled down from his mountain home, fed up with the solitude he'd recently found himself in there. It seemed that the residents of the far north were all either keeping in solitude until it warmed or had migrated south for the winter. 'Weaklings, Mason thought idly, dipping his muzzle down into the water of Kalf Lake.
The tall grey stallion was quite a sight against the new spring landscape, with its bright green grass, clear water, and new buds on the trees. He looked quite fit to return to his still-winter home at any moment - the brown-grey hair on his body was thick and long, appropriate for the mountains if not for anything further south. It made him warm even thought the air was slightly crisp, and it had taken the edge off of his normal irritation and hot-headed-ness. It just wasn't worth the effort to be a complete bastard to the occasional equine he'd come across. For the moment he was alone, and he lifted his head from the water, dripping from his muzzle. Deep chocolate eyes scanned around, searching. For all that he was quite the jerk to most he met, it wasn't because he disliked others. He had a strong need to be around others, even if his attitude often drove them away. It was a give and take game that he couldn't stop or alter, not that he cared to. He couldn't help that he loved provoking others. With a sigh, the coldblood lowered his head to graze, but kept watch nonetheless, always alert.

Avelile The always muffled humming that surrounded Avelile was extremely quiet today. Steam rolled off of her recently soaked golden coat as she stepped out of the glass covered lake. Her tone was thick and low, yet airy and mysterious. No lyrics accompanied her song, only the gentle rhythms it floated on and the occasional opening of her maw to form different sounds.
The water fell from her coat, dripping to the beat and causeing her forelock to hang over her right eye leaving only one brown iris to lazily keep watch around her. If she hadn't nearly bumped into the stallion standing at the edge of the lake, she would have never noticed his presence. Oh, samahani, samahani.

He didn't know how he hadn't seen her at first glance. But movement caught his attention from the corner of his eye, and he raised his head alertly, a piece of grass still protruding from his lips. She walked out of the water like some fairy tale, some creature of legend, a soft melody filling the air around her. It took him only a moment to come to his senses - she obviously was very much real, not some apparition. Water dripped from her coat, and the music was coming from her humming. The palomino mare seemed very much far away as she stepped to shore very close to him, not noticing him until the last second that he was even there.
"Oh, samahani, samahani." The stallion's eyes shone with amusement. He sidestepped to face her more fully, neck arched as he looked down at her. "Sorry, love, but I don't speak whatever that was." His tone was not condescending or mocking, as it might have been on a normal day, just easy-going amusement. The weather really was putting him in a decent mood.

Avelile Oh um. Momentarily caught off guard, Avelile was frozen speechlessly in time. I'm Avelile, she finally ended the silence. And that was Swahili. The golden coated mare smiled up at the large coldblooded stallion with a twinge of amusement. She preferred Swahili.
And what would your name be? She inquired before lightly shaking her sun bleached, dripping mane. He was quite charming, on the outside at least. His build strong and his height not too tall but not short either. Avelile moved in a few steps closer, feeling that all too common feeling a mare gets around a stallion. The feeling of safety. At least Avelile knew why she shouldn't necessarily trust all male creatures.

"Avelile," he repeated, testing out the sound that rolled from his rather suave tongue. He listened to her speak, amusement ever-present on his facade. She didn't seem to be afraid of him, or angry with him, which was a change from the usual - though he did recognize it was his own difference in behavior, and the fact that she didn't really know him. Something of a smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth, and he took a few steps around her as she moved closer, so his body partially blocked her line of sight. Not stifling, but an implied curiosity, and obvious interest.
"My name is Mason. Nexmason, but that's more of a mouthful than it's worth." The stallion watched the pretty golden mare, gauging her reactions, alert to her every movement. He remained carefully unobtrusive - despite how much of a jerk he generally was, he had something of an honor code, and physically overpowering a mare was very much against it. Grinning, he lowered his head a bit, brown eyes dancing. "You're a much prettier sight than I expected to find here, Avelile. I must be dreaming." As sappy as the words were, the ever-present hint of sarcasm kept from giving her the impression that he was some sort of sugar-coated nice boy.

Avelile And you, Mason, are a kimapenzi. She smiled at him as he moved around her. Her coat was drying as it sparkled in the sun and she knew what he must have meant although she didn't quite believe it herself. Napenda bila kusema mambo kama hayo isipokuwa kama maana yao. With ease, the lone, savannah mare drifted back into her native language. She knew he couldn't understand her and her voice grew in confidence as she kept her brown eyes locked onto his.
Prove it. She taunted, swiftly moving away from him.
