Weather in Kelonu was almost always perfect. Summer could be uncomfortable but still bearable and enjoyable if a water source was nearby. It was the kind of weather that encouraged one to relax and just watch the clouds pass by. This kind of setting was almost a direct correlation with Sparrow's laid back, "do everything on his own time" attitude. He was lucky to have a friend like Mogrin in order to make him get up and do things or he would have found himself in much more trouble than he has ever faced in the past.
Today, like nearly every day, Sparrow was laying on the beach, watching the waves roll in. The sun was climbing toward afternoon and he had accomplished nothing in the hours he'd been awake. He turned his head to look down the beach and saw a black speck that was steadily getting larger as it approached at a fast rate. His tall ears pricked and then flicked back as he dismissed it as a trick the sun and heat were playing on him. He closed his eyes and laid his head back on the soft, powdery sand, preparing for a nice, afternoon nap.
It was cut short, though, as he felt a pair of claws on his side, causing him to grunt in surprise and then lift his head to see what it was, only to come face to face with Mogrin the black rooster. "Wasn't there something that you were going to do today?" He asked with a cock of his head.
"Do I have to do it now, Mogrin?" Sparrow asked, closing his eyes and laying his head back down on the sand. The rooster strutted up the stallion's side and onto his neck. He leaned forward and then began pecking at Sparrow's skin until the stallion was up and shaking sand from his fur.
"If you don't do it now, you won't ever do it, Sparrow. We both know that. The rooster clucked, staring up at him for a few moments before walking forward and closing his eyes. The young stallion followed obediently. "We both know that this is what your mother and father would have wanted. Without a leader here, this island will fall into ruin and anarchy. That is why you must claim leadership before another strange horse does." Sparrow just rolled his eyes and smiled as he followed the rooster up the beach.
"All right, Mogrin. You've convinced me." The rooster froze in disbelief and turned around to look at Sparrow as he lifted his head and inhaled. "I, Sparrow, claim this island for myself to lead and welcome any horses on this island into my herd."
