Winter suited her. The season had sense a comforting familiarity about it. The bright sky and snowy landscape were her childhood, the frigid air and barren landscape her home. When other horses had long ago succumbed to the harsh weather, Katie stood tall and at peace; the season recognized a creature of its own creation.
It was an especially beautiful day. Though a solid covering of snow had yet to arrive, Katie had risen to a work coated in frost. It hung from the trees and clung to her whiskers and had produced the most pleasant crunching sound under-hoof as she transversed the short distance between the meadow where she bedded and the shores of Daoud.
Though Kate still regarded water with the up most distaste she had grown to appreciate the beauty of a sunrise by the shore. Pastels reflected faintly on the surface of the water, obscured in some places by a veil of fog.
She marveled at it, not for the first time but it was a wonder all the same. There was so much here that she'd never seen before, so many marvels that these lowlanders disregarded as commonplace... Certainly it was not the ancient openness of the Far North, but it held a magic all its own and Katie found it quite entrancing.

Okay, so maybe Daoud Lake was growing on him.
Rembrandt still resented how incredibly clear and carefree the waters were - as pristine was the day each drop fell from the great blue sky. Then again, perhaps it was a good thing. There had to be places aside from Gavril for others not like him to stir and live.Otherwise, his swamp would be overrun with hoodlums. When had he last entered the area? Weeks? Probably weeks. The stallion halted his slow walk to look up aimlessly in thought. Yes, that sounded right - when he had led the beauty that was the mare Katie out of her mossy predicament.
The two had parted ways on a good note, Rembrandt making sure to be as kind to her as she had been to him. The mare seemed to be so quiet - so easily frightened. It was endearing, really. She made him feel like he had really done a good thing in helping her. The amber stallion continued on his leisurely stroll, happy that the white coating of winter had yet to lay down on the scene. He never had been much for snow.
Glancing forward on his trail, he spotted something. A mare, about his size, of particular familiarity.
Were coincidences real?
"'Ey ova dere! 'Aven't seen you in a coon's age, Miss Cat-er-ine!" he yelled, rather loudly.

Catherine... In an instant Katie's solitary contemplation dissolved in a wash of warmth and adrenaline. She was startled, but not frightened. There was only one horse who would call her by such an extravagant name.
"Remy?" Her voice retained the inflection of a question even as she turned and confirmed beyond a doubt it was him. A hesitant smile creased her lips. Katie was more comfortable with him than any other stallion by far, but there was a certain awkwardness that she would never be able to shake. With a considerable distance still between them, Kate called out to him, uncertain of how to proceed.
"What brings you to the lake today?"

At her recognition of him, Remy could not stifle his excitement. He adored meeting up with friends and Katie was most definitely a friend of his. The stallion bounded after her like a fox pup playing with a sibling. Stopping just short of actually touching her, Remy smiled as widely as ever. Letting out a deep whinny, he calmed himself - just slightly. It was not uncommon for Gavril natives to be overenthusiastic and Remy was certainly no exception.
Prancing about in front of her and around her, Rembrandt was a little antsy, to tell the truth. He really wasn't partial to Daoud. "Ah come t'find you a'course!" It wasn't exactly the truth, but it worked. Honestly, he didn't think he'd ever see her again. As frightened as she'd seemed once he'd led her out of Gavril, he would've expected her to never return anywhere near the place. It was good to see that she wasn't too far off. Rembrandt did enjoy her company.
"S'not easeh when you're as qui-et as you arr!" he laughed.

Caught off guard by his sudden approach and exuberant display, Kate struggled to find her voice.
"I... I'm sorry, I had no idea you were looking for me. If I... Maybe..."
But an alternative solution evaded her, a moot point in any case, and the golden mare found herself unable to anything but stare wide eyed and stiff legged at the stallion who was suddenly so close at hand.

At the sight of her discomfort with his behavior, Rembrandt quickly settled down, his face not losing its jolly demeanor but his frame stopping in front of her. "You awl-right, Miss Kay-deh? Ah did not mean'ta scare ya," he said, softly. It made him feel the tiniest bit guilty - frightening her, that is. She was such a sweet thing and he was such an obnoxious oaf sometimes. He knew it, but he wasn't always ashamed of it as he was in that moment. Remy didn't show his embarrassment, but rather kept it inside, smiling to his friend.
